The Benefits of Decluttering Your Home

Is your home driving you crazy because it is so cluttered? If you can’t find items you need and have trouble freely moving around your home, you are ready to experience the benefits of organization. Since it’s hard to know where to start, we’ve listed 5 easy steps to begin decluttering your home.

1. Make some decisions.

You will have to ask yourself some tough questions when sorting through all the things in your home. When was the last time you used the item? Does it fit? Does it work? If it’s broken, is it worth fixing? Does the item make you happy?

If the item is not something you have used in a year, you probably don’t need it. Don’t be afraid to get rid of things! It will lighten your load when decluttering your home.

2. Take it one category at a time.

Begin with a big category, like your clothes. Pull all of your clothes out of your closet. Gather your clothes from your drawers, that extra closet in the hall, and the ones you’ve packed away in storage. Ask yourself the tough questions about each item. Such as, does it fit? Will you really ever wear it again? Did you wear it in the last 12 months?

If the answer is no to any of these, get rid of it. Freeing up your closet will make it easier to find your favorite clothes. After decluttering your home of unwanted clothes, move on to paperwork, books, electronics, etc.

3. Decluttering your home takes time.

Allow yourself time to work through the decluttering process. You probably won’t be able to declutter your clothes in just one hour, so set aside a whole afternoon. It will take time to look through paperwork and decide what is important. Don’t get discouraged with the process. Finish one category at a time and then tackle the next.

4. Donate your items that are gently used.

If your stuff is still in good shape, there are charitable organizations where you can donate your things who will get them to underprivileged people in need. You could also drop them off at a thrift store.

5. Organize your things.

Once you have finished decluttering your home, organize your things. Put your items into categories and keep them together. Be vigilant about keeping clutter out. Before buying something new, ask yourself if you will really use the item. Consider if you have room for new clothes, shoes, games or whatever else you want to buy. Will the item fit into the organization process you have begun? Get into the habit of discarding one similar item when you bring something new into the home.
